Rosamond Lehmann’s standalone novels span her career. Dusty Answer (1927) made her name with its honest portrayal of a young woman’s desires. A Note in Music (1930) follows two women in a dull northern English town. The Echoing Grove (1953), about two sisters in love with the same man, is considered one of her finest achievements.
The Gipsy’s Baby (1946) is sometimes listed as a standalone novel and sometimes as a collection. All of these works share Lehmann’s characteristic focus on the texture of emotional experience, particularly for women constrained by social expectations.
