Ronicky Doone is one of Max Brand’s more purely fun Western creations. Doone is a wandering cowboy who loves adventure and happens to be one of the fastest shots in the West. The first novel, Ronicky Doone (1921), sends him on a rescue mission that puts him up against a criminal gang. Ronicky Doone’s Reward (1922) follows with another adventure built around Doone’s tendency to ride toward trouble rather than away from it.
The Ronicky Doone books are fast reads with a hero who is more optimistic and easygoing than Brand’s typical protagonists. They were originally serialized in pulp magazines and have the brisk pacing and cliffhanger plotting that format demanded. For readers who enjoy traditional Western adventure stories with a likable lead character, these two books are a solid pick.
