Mistry’s short fiction came before his novels and established both his setting and his concerns. Tales from Firozsha Baag (1987), published in North America as Swimming Lessons and Other Stories from Firozsha Baag (1988), collects stories set in a Bombay apartment building whose Parsi residents appear and reappear across the book, building a portrait of a community through individual lives.
The Scream (2006) is a later collection that departs from the Bombay setting and shows Mistry’s range. Together, the three collections in this section demonstrate that he is as accomplished in short form as in the longer novel, though it is the novels that brought him the larger audience.
