Roberto Bolano wrote thirteen standalone novels between 1989 and 2016, several of which were published after his death in 2003. The earliest, The Third Reich, was written in 1989 but not published until much later, while 2666, his longest and most ambitious novel, appeared in 2004. Later posthumous releases like Woes of the True Policeman (2011) and The Spirit of Science Fiction (2016) continued to reach readers years after Bolano’s passing.
These novels can be read in any order since each one stands on its own. Readers new to Bolano might start with The Savage Detectives (1998) or Distant Star (1996), both well-known entry points, though shorter works like By Night in Chile (2000) or Amulet (1999) are also good places to begin. The list here follows publication order for convenience, but there is no wrong way to move through them.
