Robert Dugoni’s standalone novels show a different side of his writing from the series thrillers. The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell (2018) is a coming-of-age story about a boy with a rare eye condition, and it became one of Dugoni’s most popular books. The World Played Chess (2021) interweaves a Vietnam veteran’s wartime memories with a present-day father-son story.
His other standalones include the early thriller Damage Control, The 7th Canon (a legal thriller set in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district), A Killing on the Hill (a historical mystery set in 1930s Seattle), and Hold Strong (2025). The range of subjects shows Dugoni is comfortable well beyond the crime fiction genre.
