The Richard Browning series is Peter Corris at his most playful. Browning is a comic creation who finds himself in Hollywood, the Old West, India, and various other settings across eight books published between 1987 and 1995. The titles alone (Beverly Hills Browning, Browning In Buckskin, Browning Sahib) signal the tone.
These books are a departure from the hardboiled crime fiction Corris is best known for. They’re lighter, funnier, and more openly entertaining, with Browning blundering through situations that would defeat a more serious character. Corris clearly enjoyed writing them as a break from the darker Hardy and Crawley novels.
