Ribbons of Steel is the first trilogy written by Judith Pella and Tracie Peterson under their shared pen name. Published between 1997 and 1998, the three novels follow the dreams and struggles of a family during America’s earliest railroad construction period. Distant Dreams opens the series, with A Hope Beyond and A Promise for Tomorrow continuing the story.
The books are set against the backdrop of a nation expanding westward, with the railroad serving as both a literal and figurative engine of change. The series was followed by Ribbons West, which picks up the story in a later period of railroad history.
