The Rev. Clare Fergusson and Russ Van Alstyne Mystery series by Julia Spencer-Fleming consists of twelve books published between 2002 and 2025. Set in the fictional town of Millers Kill in New York’s Adirondack region, the series combines murder investigations with the personal lives of its two leads.
In the Bleak Midwinter (2002) introduces Clare Fergusson, a newly ordained Episcopal priest and Gulf War veteran, and Russ Van Alstyne, the town’s police chief. Their first case together begins a professional and personal connection that grows more complex through A Fountain Filled with Blood, Out of the Deep I Cry, and the subsequent novels. The later books, including One Was a Soldier (2011) and Through the Evil Days (2013), deal with heavier themes like PTSD and addiction. After a seven-year gap, Hid from Our Eyes (2020) brought the series back, and At Midnight Comes the Cry (2025) is the most recent entry.
