The Remixed Classics series takes well-known novels from the Western literary canon and hands them to diverse YA authors for fresh retellings. Each book keeps the bones of the original story but reimagines the characters, settings, and themes through new cultural lenses. A Clash of Steel, for instance, turns Treasure Island into a story about two Chinese girls searching for pirate treasure, while So Many Beginnings recasts the March sisters from Little Women as Black girls growing up during the Reconstruction era.
The series launched in 2021 and has grown to cover nearly a dozen classic titles. Self-Made Boys gives The Great Gatsby a queer Latin American perspective, written by Anna-Marie McLemore. Teach the Torches to Burn puts a trans boy at the heart of Romeo and Juliet. The books can be read in any order since each retelling is independent, but together they make a strong case for why old stories deserve new voices. The series continues with This Wretched Beauty arriving in 2026.
