The Ballad and the Source (1944) is narrated by a young girl who gradually learns the story of the charismatic and disturbing Mrs. Doris Doddington Dodd through a series of conversations. Rebecca Landon, who appears in both books, returns in A Sea-Grape Tree (1976), Lehmann’s final novel, written more than thirty years later.
The long gap between the two books gives the pair an unusual quality. A Sea-Grape Tree is a quieter, more reflective work than the earlier novel, shaped by the decades of life Lehmann lived between them.
