Raymond Benson’s standalone novels show the range of his interests beyond franchise tie-in work. Evil Hours (2001) and Face Blind (2003) were among his first original thrillers, written while he was still producing James Bond novels. Face Blind deals with a protagonist who suffers from prosopagnosia, the inability to recognize faces, a medical condition Benson used as the foundation for a suspense plot. Sweetie’s Diamonds (2006) is a thriller about a woman whose past in the adult film industry comes back to haunt her.
Several of his standalones are tied to video game properties. H.A.W.X. (2009) novelizes the Ubisoft aerial combat game, Homefront: The Voice of Freedom (2011) is set in the world of the THQ shooter, and Dying Light: Nightmare Row (2015) adapts the Techland survival horror game. His later original novels, including The Secrets on Chicory Lane (2017), Blues in the Dark (2019), and The Mad, Mad Murders of Marigold Way (2022), move into domestic suspense and mystery territory, set in small towns and quiet neighborhoods where dark secrets surface.
