The Quirke series consists of nine crime novels published between 2006 and 2023 under the Benjamin Black pen name. The series follows Quirke, a Dublin pathologist in the 1950s, who repeatedly stumbles onto deaths that are not what they seem. Starting with Christine Falls, the series builds a picture of Ireland during a period of institutional secrecy and corruption.
The series grew steadily with The Silver Swan, Elegy for April, A Death in Summer, Vengeance, and Holy Orders before a gap and return with Even the Dead, April in Spain, and The Lock-Up. Banville brings his literary skill to the crime format, creating atmospheric mysteries that work both as procedurals and as portraits of mid-century Irish society.
