The Quag Keep series begins with Andre Norton’s 1978 novel of the same name, widely regarded as the first novel inspired by Dungeons & Dragons. The story follows a group of people from our world who find themselves trapped in a fantasy realm, their identities merged with the game characters they had been playing. Jean Rabe wrote the sequel, Return to Quag Keep, in 2006.
Return to Quag Keep picks up the concept of gamers pulled into a fantasy world and expands on Norton’s original vision. Rabe was a natural choice for the sequel given her extensive work in D&D-related fiction. The two books together offer an interesting look at how the relationship between tabletop gaming and fiction has evolved over nearly three decades.
