The Pop Classics series from Quirk Books takes beloved movies and TV shows and retells them as illustrated picture books for young readers. Each book condenses a fan-favorite film or show into simple, kid-friendly language alongside colorful artwork by illustrator Kim Smith. The stories are adapted by Rebecca Gyllenhaal and cover titles ranging from 1980s classics like Back to the Future and E.T. to holiday favorites like Home Alone and Elf.
The series launched in 2013 and grew to 13 books by 2022. The picture books are designed for children ages 4 to 8 but have found an audience with adult collectors who grew up watching the original films. Titles span a wide range, from sci-fi (The X-Files, Doctor Who) to comedy (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, School of Rock) to action (The Karate Kid, Buffy the Vampire Slayer).
Each book works on its own, so there is no required reading order. The series was developed by Jason Rekulak during his time as publisher at Quirk Books, the independent Philadelphia press known for offbeat genre mashups.
