The Planet Pirates trilogy is set in a future where space pirates raid colony worlds, capturing settlers and selling them into slavery. Anne McCaffrey created the series with a different co-author for each book, giving each novel its own voice while keeping the story connected.
Sassinak (1990), co-written with Elizabeth Moon, follows a girl who survives a pirate attack on her colony and grows up to become a Fleet officer hunting the pirates who destroyed her home. The Death of Sleep (1990), co-written with Jody Lynn Nye, tells the story of Lunzie Mespil, a doctor who keeps getting placed in cold sleep and waking decades later, losing everyone she knows to time. Generation Warriors (1991), again with Moon, brings Sassinak and Lunzie together as they work to expose the wealthy families backing the pirate fleets.
The books can be read in publication order, though Sassinak and The Death of Sleep run on parallel timelines before their threads converge in Generation Warriors. Readers who like McCaffrey’s blend of personal stakes and large-scale science fiction will find a lot to enjoy here.
