The Pine Deep trilogy by Jonathan Maberry is a horror series set in the fictional town of Pine Deep, Pennsylvania. The town trades on its reputation as a haunted tourist destination, but the horror becomes real when an ancient evil begins to stir. Ghost Road Blues (2006) opens the series by establishing the town’s troubled past and its vulnerable present.
Maberry draws on classic horror traditions in these books. Vampires, ghosts, and a centuries-old evil all figure into the plot, but the strength of the trilogy is in its characters and its slow build toward catastrophe. Dead Man’s Song deepens the mystery while Bad Moon Rising delivers the full-scale confrontation between the town and the forces threatening it.
The Pine Deep trilogy was Maberry’s debut as a novelist, and it won the Bram Stoker Award for Best First Novel. It established him as a major voice in horror fiction and set the tone for much of his later work. The trilogy remains one of his most popular and well-regarded series.
