Phillip Horatio Hazard is a British Royal Navy officer whose career spans two mid-Victorian conflicts. V.A. Stuart introduced him in The Valiant Sailors (1965) as a First Lieutenant aboard the frigate HMS Trojan, and tracked his promotions and commands across eight novels.
The first six books cover the Crimean War (1853-1856), including naval operations in the Black Sea and the siege of Sebastopol. Hazard in Circassia takes him to the Caucasus front. The final two books shift to the Indian Mutiny and the Second Opium War, with Hazard fighting at Fatsham Creek in China and participating in the relief of Lucknow. Several books carry alternate titles from UK and US editions — Victory at Sebastopol was also published as Hazard to the Rescue, and Guns to the Far East appeared as Shannon’s Brigade.
