Philip P. I. Paris’s standalone novels are rooted in Scottish and British history. The Italian Chapel (2009) draws on the real story of POWs on Orkney who built a chapel from almost nothing during WWII. Men Cry Alone (2012) explores isolation and hardship, while Effie’s War (2018) is set during wartime Scotland.
The Last Witch of Scotland (2023) reaches further back in time to the early 18th century. Based on the case of Janet Horne, who was executed for witchcraft in Dornoch in 1727, the novel examines superstition, fear, and injustice in rural Scotland.
