Phil Tucker published four standalone novels in 2012, the same year he began his writing career. These books predate his move into epic fantasy and LitRPG and represent his early experiments with different genres and styles. The Grind Show, Crude Sunlight, Throne, and One by One each tell independent stories that do not connect to his later series work.
These early novels show Tucker testing out ideas and finding his voice as a writer. The subjects range from dark and gritty to speculative, and the writing style is noticeably different from the polished fantasy prose of his later Chronicles of the Black Gate or Immortal Great Souls series.
For readers who know Tucker primarily through his fantasy work, these standalone novels offer a look at where he started. They can be read in any order since they share no characters or settings.
