Mary Monica Pulver’s Peter and Kori Brichter series launched in 1987 with Murder at the War, set at a Society for Creative Anachronism event where costumed medieval reenactors have to deal with a very real murder. The debut earned an Anthony Award nomination for Best First Novel.
Peter Brichter is a sharp but socially awkward police detective who meets Kori Price, a resilient horse breeder at Tretower Ranch, during the investigation. Their relationship grows across the five books as the setting shifts from the reenactment grounds to the horse country of Illinois. By the final book, Show Stopper (1992), Kori takes the lead as the primary investigator at an Arabian horse show.
The series sits between police procedural and cozy mystery. Peter brings the detective work and dry wit, while Kori’s equestrian world provides the backdrop and supporting cast. Pulver went on to write two more mystery series under different pen names, but the Brichter books remain a favorite among readers who like their mysteries with a side of historical reenactment and horse sense.
