The Pegasus series begins with the 2010 novel Pegasus, which is set in a kingdom where humans and pegasi have lived as allies for centuries but have never been able to communicate directly. When Princess Sylvii is bound to the pegasus Ebon in a traditional ceremony, they discover they can speak to each other without the help of magician-translators. This rare gift draws suspicion and hostility from those who benefit from the communication barrier.
McKinley planned the story as a two-part work, but the second book has not yet appeared. The first novel ends at a dramatic turning point, and readers have waited years for the conclusion. Despite the unfinished state of the series, Pegasus is praised for its detailed world-building, the emotional bond between Sylvii and Ebon, and its exploration of politics, language, and trust between very different beings.
