The Peacekeeper series launched in 2012 with The Demon Within, one of Stacey Brutger’s earliest published novels. The story pairs Caly Sawyer, a demon hunter with a dark secret, with Ruman, an angel punished centuries ago for failing in his duty. Ruman was sealed in stone and only wakes every few decades for a chance at redemption. He has failed every time until Caly accidentally brings him back.
Caly does not trust the stranger who rescued her, sensing he is not human. What she keeps hidden is that she used to be a demon herself, and the infection she always saw as a curse may be the key to winning the brewing war between demons and humans. The two must overcome their suspicion of each other before the conflict consumes them both. The Demon Within was Brutger’s first foray into the angel-and-demon subgenre and established many of the themes she would return to in later series: dangerous heroines, reluctant allies, and worlds where trust is hard to earn.
