Paul Auster worked in film as both a screenwriter and director. His best-known screenplay is Smoke (1995), a film set in a Brooklyn cigar shop starring Harvey Keitel and William Hurt. The script grew out of Auster’s short story “Auggie Wren’s Christmas Story,” which he originally wrote for The New York Times. Blue in the Face (1995) was a companion piece filmed on the same set with largely improvised dialogue.
Auster went on to write and direct Lulu on the Bridge (1998) and The Inner Life of Martin Frost (2007). His Collected Screenplays (2010) gathers these works together. The Music of Chance, which appears in this listing, is actually a 1990 novel that was adapted into a film in 1993.
