Ray Peden’s Patrick Grainger series is set in and around Kentucky, with each book built on a personal crisis that drags its protagonist into something much bigger. The first book, One Tenth of the Law, starts when Grainger witnesses the kidnapping of a young girl in broad daylight. As the investigation unfolds, evidence surfaces that the fire which killed Grainger’s family was no accident, and the trail leads to a wartime conspiracy.
Prime Cut raises the stakes when Grainger’s daughter is caught in a drive-by shooting at an animal rights rally in Lexington. The case takes him down through the back roads of North Carolina to a massive slaughterhouse operation and the multinational empire behind it. Peden’s firsthand knowledge of Kentucky geography and small-town life gives both books a strong sense of place that grounds the action.
