The Parasitology trilogy, written as Mira Grant, explores body horror through a science fiction premise. In a near-future world, a biotech company has created the Intestinal Bodyguard — a genetically engineered tapeworm that manages its host’s health needs. Parasite (2013) introduces Sal Mitchell, who woke from a coma with no memories and a perfect bill of health, just as reports emerge of implant recipients losing their minds.
Symbiont and Chimera continue the story as the parasites evolve in unexpected ways and the line between host and symbiont blurs. The trilogy combines McGuire’s biological fascination with genuine horror about the boundaries of identity and what it means to be a person.
