Over the Hedge is a syndicated comic strip created by Michael Fry and writer T Lewis. The strip debuted in 1995 and centers on a raccoon named RJ and a turtle named Verne, along with their woodland friends, as they navigate life on the edge of an ever-expanding suburb. The humor comes from the contrast between the animals’ simple forest life and the absurdities of human civilization just beyond the hedge.
Four book collections of the strip were published between 1996 and 2006. The strip gained widespread recognition when DreamWorks adapted it into an animated film in 2006. These collections capture the early years of the strip and are a good way to experience the characters and jokes that made Over the Hedge a newspaper favorite for years.
