Otherland is Tad Williams’ ambitious four-volume science fiction series, published between 1996 and 2001. Set in a near-future world where the internet has evolved into a full sensory virtual reality network, the story follows a group of characters who discover that something sinister is happening inside the most exclusive virtual worlds. Children are falling into comas, and the answers lie deep inside a network controlled by some of the most powerful people on Earth.
The core series runs from City of Golden Shadow through Sea of Silver Light, with two additional shorter works set in the same universe. Williams built dozens of virtual worlds within the story, each with its own rules and atmosphere, from ancient Egypt to an alien planet to a reimagined Oz. The result is a series that feels enormous in scope, mixing cyberpunk technology with myth and adventure.
