The Oregon Files centers on Juan Cabrillo, a former CIA operative who runs a private intelligence and mercenary outfit from a ship called the Oregon. From the outside, the Oregon looks like a decrepit bulk carrier, but underneath the rusted exterior she carries advanced weapons, a medical bay, and enough technology to run a small military operation. It is a great premise for an action series, giving the crew both a mobile base and a cover story that lets them go anywhere without attracting attention.
The series began in 2003 with Golden Buddha and expanded steadily, with a new book appearing most years. The missions take Cabrillo and his team to every corner of the globe, from the South China Sea to the coast of Africa to the Arctic. The plots tend to involve rogue states, arms dealers, or shadowy organizations pursuing world-altering technology, which keeps the stakes high without becoming repetitive. Du Brul’s contribution to the series was always substantial on the craft side, and after Cussler’s death in 2020 he continued delivering at the same pace.
With nineteen books through 2025, this is one of the longer-running action series around. Fans of maritime adventure, high-tech military fiction, and international intrigue will find the Oregon Files one of the most reliably entertaining series in the genre.
