Once Upon a Time in the West takes familiar fairy tale stories and transplants them into the Old West. Beauty and the Bounty Hunter (2012) reworks Beauty and the Beast with a bounty hunter and a con woman, while An Outlaw in Wonderland (2013) puts an Alice in Wonderland spin on a frontier doctor’s story. The Lone Warrior followed in 2022 after a long gap.
The fairy tale framework gives each book a recognizable shape, but Handeland fills the stories with western action, gunfights, and romance. The series is a fun change of pace from her paranormal work and will appeal to readers who like their historical romance with a twist.
