The O’Hara & Krekorian series is Peter De Jonge’s solo crime fiction work, featuring NYPD Detective Darlene O’Hara and her partner Serge “K” Krekorian. The first book, Shadows Still Remain (2009), was named a Washington Post Best Book of the Year. It follows O’Hara as she investigates the murder of a brilliant NYU student named Francesca Pena, whose mutilated body is found in lower Manhattan the Monday after Thanksgiving. When the high-profile case gets handed to a more senior detective, O’Hara refuses to let it go.
Buried on Avenue B (2012) picks up with O’Hara and Krekorian again when a home health aide reports that her elderly client confessed to murdering his partner 17 years ago and burying the body in a garden at 6th Street and Avenue B. When police dig, they find a corpse, but it belongs to a nine-year-old boy who died far more recently. De Jonge wrote both novels after years of co-authoring bestsellers with James Patterson, and the books show a grittier, more personal voice than his collaborative work.
