The Odd Thomas series by Dean Koontz follows a young short-order cook in the fictional town of Pico Mundo, California, who has the ability to see the spirits of the dead. He can also see bodachs, shadowy creatures that swarm around people who are about to commit or suffer violence. Armed with these gifts and a quiet determination, Odd tries to help the dead find peace and prevent the living from coming to harm.
The series began in 2003 with Odd Thomas and ran for nine books through Saint Odd in 2015. Along the way, Koontz published both full-length novels and shorter works like Odd Interlude and the short story You Are Destined To Be Together Forever. The books blend supernatural horror with humor and genuine warmth, largely through Odd’s first-person narration, which is self-deprecating and honest. The first novel was adapted into a 2013 film starring Anton Yelchin.
Koontz has described Odd Thomas as his favorite character he has ever written. The series developed a devoted readership over its twelve-year run, and Saint Odd brought the story to a definitive close.
