The Obsidian Chronicles is a fantasy trilogy that follows Arlian, a boy whose village is destroyed by dragons during a period known as “dragon weather.” After years of slavery in obsidian mines, Arlian escapes and dedicates himself to hunting down the dragons responsible for his family’s death. The first book, Dragon Weather, covers his journey from slave to wealthy dragonslayer.
As the trilogy continues through The Dragon Society and Dragon Venom, Arlian learns that the dragons and humans have a deeply intertwined history. Some humans carry dragon venom in their blood, granting them long life but also connecting them to the dragons in ways they do not fully understand. Arlian must decide whether destroying all dragons is truly the right course, even as his desire for revenge pushes him forward.
Watt-Evans brings his trademark attention to world-building to this series, creating a society where dragon attacks are a known but rare catastrophe, like earthquakes or hurricanes. The politics of dragonslaying and the economics of obsidian mining add depth to what could have been a straightforward revenge story. The trilogy is complete and tells a full arc from start to finish.
