The Norumbegan Quartet begins with The Game of Sunken Places (2004), in which two friends visit a creepy old mansion and are drawn into a board game that turns out to be very real and very dangerous. The series expands across The Suburb Beyond the Stars (2010), The Empire of Gut and Bone (2011), and The Chamber in the Sky (2012), taking the characters deeper into the strange world of Norumbega.
Anderson blends fantasy adventure with his characteristic wit and willingness to go to dark places even in books for younger readers. The Norumbegan Quartet is more traditional fantasy than Feed or Octavian Nothing, but it carries the same intelligence and refusal to talk down to its audience.
