Northwest Passage was John A. Heldt’s first series, launched in 2012 with The Mine and completed in 2014 with The Mirror. The five books are set in the Pacific Northwest and send characters back to different decades of the twentieth century, from the World War II era through the 1960s.
The series established the formula that Heldt would refine in his later work: modern characters dropped into historical settings where they must navigate unfamiliar social norms while trying not to alter the timeline. The Pacific Northwest setting gives the series a regional identity, and Heldt’s attention to period detail makes each era feel lived-in and specific.
