The Northern Lights trilogy follows Norwegian immigrants to America in the late 19th century. The Captain’s Bride (1998) begins with a transatlantic voyage and a romance between two passengers from different social classes. Deep Harbor (1999) and Midnight Sun (2000) continue the story as the characters settle into American life, facing the typical pressures of immigrant communities: language barriers, economic hardship, and the pull between old and new worlds.
The series was part of the late-1990s wave of Christian historical fiction and draws on the real history of Scandinavian immigration to the American Midwest.
