The Nobody’s Princess duology by Esther M. Friesner reimagines the early life of Helen of Sparta, long before she became Helen of Troy. In this young adult retelling, Helen is a headstrong girl who refuses to sit still and look pretty. She disguises herself as a boy, learns to fight, and eventually joins the quest for the Golden Fleece.
Nobody’s Princess (2007) introduces Helen as a young girl chafing against the restrictions placed on Spartan women of high birth. The sequel, Nobody’s Prize (2008), follows her further adventures among the Argonauts. Friesner brings her characteristic wit to the Greek myths while creating a Helen who is resourceful and independent rather than simply the beautiful face that launched a thousand ships.
