Nnedi Okorafor is a Nigerian American science fiction and fantasy writer who has worked extensively in both prose and the graphic novel form. Her Marvel Comics work focuses on Wakanda and its characters, particularly Shuri, T’Challa’s sister, who she wrote as a scientist and adventurer in her own right rather than a supporting character.
Black Panther: Long Live the King (2018) and Wakanda Forever (2018) were published alongside the first Black Panther film, extending the world of Wakanda into new comic storylines. The Shuri series gave the character her own ongoing title, following Shuri as she deals with threats to Wakanda while T’Challa is off-world. After the Rain (2021) is an original graphic novel set in Nigeria, adapting Okafor’s own short story about a woman caught in a supernatural flooding event.
Also included in this collection is the graphic novel adaptation of Octavia E. Butler’s Parable of the Sower (2020), adapted by Damian Duffy and illustrated by John Jennings. Okorafor and Butler are often discussed together as two of the most significant Black women writers in speculative fiction, and Okorafor has been open about Butler’s influence on her own work.
