Nina Reilly is an attorney and single mother working in South Lake Tahoe, handling cases that tend to get complicated fast. The series began with Motion to Suppress (1995), in which Nina defends a woman accused of killing her husband, and the books follow her through a long run of legal entanglements, personal struggles, and the occasional threat to her life.
The setting matters. Pamela O’Shaughnessy practiced law in South Lake Tahoe for years, and the courtroom details and small-town legal dynamics come from that experience. Nina is not a big-firm lawyer. She works alone, takes on difficult clients, and deals with the kind of messy cases that land in the lap of a sole practitioner in a resort town. The series ran for thirteen novels over sixteen years, ending with Dreams of the Dead in 2011.
