Nikki Powergloves begins when Nikki, an ordinary girl, discovers a pair of gloves that give her superhero abilities. The first book, A Hero is Born, establishes her powers and her world — one where other kids with powers also exist, along with adults who want to control or capture those with abilities. The tone is light and fun, with action sequences and humor aimed squarely at younger readers.
The series moves quickly through six books, introducing new characters with different powers, a governing Power Council, and eventually a group of power-wielding outlaws for Nikki to face. Estes wrote the series in 2012 and returned to it in 2015 with two more books, rounding out the story with a conclusion in the Power Giver.
Nikki Powergloves is a departure from most of Estes’s catalog, which skews toward older teen and adult readers. It is a good option for parents looking for action-focused middle grade fantasy with a female lead, and for fans of series like I Am the Messenger or The Girl Who Could Fly.
