The Night World series by L.J. Smith ran from 1996 to 1998, with nine books published by Simon & Schuster. The world Smith built is a secret parallel society of supernatural creatures — vampires, witches, werewolves, and shapeshifters — who pass unseen among the human population and are bound by laws designed to keep the two worlds apart.
Each novel centres on a different pair of characters — a human or half-human protagonist and a Night World member — who discover they are soulmates, a bond that cannot be broken regardless of the laws against it. The situations vary: Secret Vampire is about a dying girl and her vampire childhood friend; Daughters of Darkness follows a trio of vampire sisters on the run; Spellbinder is about a teen witch caught between two rivals. The formula is consistent, but Smith varies the supernatural species and the moral stakes enough to keep the series fresh.
All nine books were reissued in omnibus collections. A tenth book was planned but never published.
