Nicola Barker’s standalone novels show a writer who never repeats herself. Reversed Forecast (1994) and Small Holdings (1995) were relatively conventional early works. Clear: A Transparent Novel (2004) took on David Blaine’s glass box stunt above the Thames. The Cauliflower (2016) reimagined the life of a Victorian woman in India. H(A)ppy (2017) created a dystopian future through radically experimental typography and structure.
Her most recent standalone, TonyInterruptor (2025), continues this pattern of unpredictability. Each book tackles a different subject with a different formal approach, which makes her standalone work hard to summarize but consistently interesting for readers who value originality in their fiction.
