The Nick Zuliani series takes Ian Morson’s historical mystery writing to 13th-century China. Zuliani is a Venetian merchant in the court of Kublai Khan who gets pulled into criminal investigations far from home. City of the Dead, published in 2008, and A Deadly Injustice from 2011 make up the two-book series.
The setting gives Morson a chance to write about a period and place that gets less attention in English-language historical fiction. The Mongol Empire provides a rich and unfamiliar backdrop for mystery, with Zuliani’s outsider status adding tension to his investigations.
