Nick Harkaway’s standalone novels are each distinct in setting and genre, but they share a tendency toward elaborate plotting, dark humor, and ideas that operate on a large scale. The Gone-Away World (2008) is set after a war that has literally unmade reality in parts of the world. Angelmaker (2012) follows a clockwork repairman who accidentally activates a doomsday device. Tigerman (2014) is a more personal story about a soldier on a small island who becomes a reluctant superhero figure.
Gnomon (2017) is Harkaway’s longest and most structurally complex novel, set in a near-future surveillance state where an investigation into a suspect’s death leads through nested narratives spanning thousands of years. These books reward patient readers who enjoy fiction that takes unexpected turns and refuses to stay in one lane.
