Niall Williams’s non-fiction books chronicle his life in Kiltumper, County Clare, where he and his wife Christine Breen settled after leaving Dublin. Their first book together, O Come Ye Back to Ireland (1987), described the move and early adjustment to rural life. Several more books followed in the same vein, including When Summer’s in the Meadow (1989) and The Pipes are Calling (1990).
After a long gap, Williams returned to the subject with In Kiltumper (2021), a reflection on decades of life in the same place. The Luck of the Irish (1995) also belongs to this group of non-fiction works. Together, these books form an ongoing record of one family’s experience in the Irish countryside.
