Niall Ferguson’s biographical works focus on figures who shaped 20th-century finance and foreign policy. High Financier (2010) tells the story of Siegmund Warburg, who fled Nazi Germany and rebuilt his career in the City of London, eventually becoming one of the most important bankers in postwar Europe. Ferguson based the book on over ten thousand previously unavailable letters and diary entries from the Warburg archives.
Kissinger: 1923-1968: The Idealist (2015) is the first volume of Ferguson’s authorized biography of Henry Kissinger. The book covers Kissinger’s childhood as a Jewish refugee from Nazi Germany, his service in World War II, his years at Harvard, and his rise as a foreign policy adviser through 1968. The volume won the Council on Foreign Relations Arthur Ross Prize. A second volume, covering Kissinger’s time in government, is expected to follow.
