New Super-Man was Gene Luen Yang’s creation for DC Comics’ Rebirth era. The series introduces Kenan Kong, a brash Shanghai teenager who receives Superman’s abilities through a government experiment. Unlike most Superman stories, the hero starts out deeply flawed — Kenan is selfish and immature, and the series follows his gradual transformation into someone worthy of the S-shield.
Yang draws heavily on Chinese mythology, martial arts philosophy, and the concept of qi to build a superhero mythology that feels distinctly different from the Metropolis-based books. The series ran for four collected volumes before concluding as New Super-Man and the Justice League of China.
