New Fear Street is a four-book series published in 1998-1999, continuing R.L. Stine’s Fear Street franchise after the original 49-book run concluded. The books follow the same standalone format as the originals: each one features different Shadyside teenagers caught up in a new horror scenario on or near Fear Street.
The Stepbrother kicked off the series in 1998, followed by Camp Out, Scream, Jennifer, Scream!, and The Bad Girl. Like the original Fear Street books, these are quick reads with twist endings and teen-centric plots. The “New” branding was meant to signal a fresh start for the franchise, though the books themselves are very similar in tone and structure to what came before.
New Fear Street turned out to be short-lived. With only four books published, it was one of the smaller sub-series in the franchise. The late 1990s saw the overall teen horror market cooling down after its massive mid-decade peak, and several YA horror series (including Fear Street) wound down during this period. It would be several years before Stine returned to the franchise with Fear Street Nights in 2005.
