N.D. Wilson has written three standalone novels outside of his major series. Leepike Ridge is an adventure story about a boy named Thomas Hammond who floats downstream on a piece of Styrofoam and ends up trapped beneath a mountain, where he finds a castaway, a dog, and a hidden stash of treasure. The book channels the spirit of classic boy-adventure stories and works well as a quick, exciting read for younger audiences.
Boys of Blur takes a very different approach, transplanting the bones of the Beowulf legend into the Florida Everglades. Charlie Reynolds moves to the town of Taper when his stepfather becomes the local high school football coach, and he soon discovers that the sugarcane fields and swampland surrounding the town hold something ancient and dangerous. Wilson’s earliest published novel, Right Behind (2001), preceded his breakout success and is harder to find today.
