Natalie Haynes’s novels have evolved from contemporary fiction into Greek myth retellings that have found a broad international audience. Her debut, The Great Escape (2007), was followed by The Furies (2014, also published as The Amber Fury), a psychological thriller woven through with Greek tragedy. The Children of Jocasta (2017) retold the Oedipus and Antigone stories through the women in the family.
A Thousand Ships (2019) became her breakthrough, telling the Trojan War through the voices of its women — goddesses, queens, slaves, and the dead. It was shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction and established Haynes as one of the most prominent voices in the myth retelling wave. Stone Blind (2022) turned to Medusa’s story, and No Friend to This House continues her project of reclaiming Greek women’s narratives.
