Nancy Farmer’s standalone novels showcase her range. “The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm” (1994) is set in Zimbabwe in the year 2194 and follows three children who escape their sheltered life only to be captured and forced to work in a mine, while three detectives with enhanced senses search for them. “A Girl Named Disaster” (1996), also set in Africa, follows an eleven-year-old girl who flees an arranged marriage and survives alone in the wilderness.
Both African-set novels earned Newbery Honors. “Do You Know Me” (1993) and “The Warm Place” (1995) are earlier works for younger readers, while “A New Year’s Tale” (2013) came much later. Farmer’s standalone novels share her interest in young people navigating dangerous circumstances with resourcefulness and courage.
